World Cassowary Day 2015

 

 

Celebrating Cassowaries and their friends

 

This year Mission Beach is hosting World Cassowary Day. The community event will be held at the C4 Enivironment Centre and Arboretum just to the north of the Mission Beach village. The day will be filled with fun and educational activites encouraging participation from all ages. 

 

Sept 26 10am - 2pm

See below a list of who will be setting up displays.

Wear Cassowary colours

Blue Red and Black

  featuring other threatened species of the Wet Tropics

Groups who work with threatened species or other native wildlife will be setting up displays at WCD to share knowledge and promote the wildlife conservation work they do. 


• displays, competitions, celebrities, stories

The federal Threatened Species Commissioner is coming as our special guest to talk about Australia’s threatened species and meet Wet Tropics wildlife groups. See below to see who will be setting up a display.

 

ABC Far North radio is an official supporter and will be broadcasting interviews with organisations in the weeks leading up to as well as being there on the day.

 

Wear blue red and black

Come along and join the fun by wearing cassowary colours. Prizes for the best dressed.

 

Pop up Gallery will be on show featuring art and cassowaries.

 

Promoting low impact Nature Based tourism


• live native animals

Zoo to you will have live native animals. A great interactive way for your family to learn more about our local wildlife.


• wildlife tours on Sunday

Local businesses, tour guides and others with knowledge of the local environment will offer opportunities to explore the special natural values of Mission Beach through the eyes of locals.

 


• great school holiday activity

Join in the fun with Envirokids making your own cassowary casque and  mask


• fun and education for all ages

Mission Beach Earth Art group will be creating artworks  from natural materials in the environment that reflect their love of nature, and the need to conserve and protect it.


• beachside location

The display marquees will be under the shade in the Arboretum next to C4 on Porter Promenade. Kayaks will be avialbale for hire from the beach directly in front of the event. See map above.

 

• music

Amanda Kay and Paul Brennan will be entertaining all day with acoustic music.

 


• food

The Mission Beach Lions Club will have a food and drinks for sale.

The Mission Beach village is just a short stroll away.
